LLETZ
Electroconization of the cervix (LLETZ - Large Loop Excision of Transformation Zone) is a diagnostic and therapeutic procedure, in which a piece of tissue is taken from the surface of the cervix with the help of a special loop electrode and an electroknife.
The necessity of histological examination or removal of a pathologically affected part of the surface of the cervix is an indication for LLETZ.
The procedure is performed under local or general anesthesia in a manipulation room equipped for the purpose by a qualified OG specialist.
LLETZ does not require any prior preparation on your part.
The procedure is planned in the first days after menstruation and begins as a simple gynecological examination with the insertion of a speculum. Colposcopy is then performed to visualize the changed areas. This is followed by the application of a local anesthetic, which feels like a slight sting. At the patient's request, it can also be performed under general anesthesia.
LLETZ is performed in one step, and with good technique, the altered area is easily removed. Bleeding is usually scanty or absent. If necessary, additional material is taken from the periphery or from the cervical canal. Finally, the tip of the cone is cut out in order to histologically remove the changed area.
The duration of the entire manipulation is between 15 and 30 minutes. In some cases, you may experience period-like pain or vaginal burning. We will ask you to stay for about half an hour for observation, after which you will be able to continue with your usual daily activities.
After the procedure, the removed tissue will be sent for histological examination in a specialized laboratory. Another examination is done after three menstrual cycles.
