Medical abortion
Unfortunately, not all pregnancies develop normally.
Sometimes, different complications are observed - blighted ovum, absence of heart beat, detachment of the gestation sac, etc. which requires termination of pregnancy for medical reasons.
In addition, interruption of pregnancy is legal in Bulgaria early gestation - up to 12 weeks of gestation.
There are two possible methods for termination of pregnancy - medical (by using medication) and instrumental (by surgery).
Medical abortion is the method of choice in early gestation.
Medical termination of pregnancy can be carried out up to the 63rd day from the first day of the last menstrual period. After that, the effectiveness of the method significantly decreases.
Before the procedure, the presence of intrauterine pregnancy is confirmed by ultrasound and the gestational age is accurately verified.
The miscarriage is completed with the help of two oral drugs taken at certain time intervals. The first tablet contains an antihormone that blocks the effect of progesterone (the pregnancy hormone). The second drug, which is a prostaglandin analogue, is taken 36 hours after the first medication.
The abortion usually occurs a few hours after the last drug or on the next day. Vaginal bleeding, similar to menstruation, occurs which can be accompanied by some pelvic pain and discomfort. It usually continues for several days and gradually decreases over time.
The presence and cessation of vaginal bleeding does not necessarily mean that the medical abortion was successful.
For these reasons, up to 2 or 3 weeks after the procedure, a follow-up scan is performed to evaluate the intrauterine contents.
The main advantage of the medical termination of pregnancy is that it does not require hospitalization, instrumental intervention and it does not affect the possibilities for future pregnancies.
The main disadvantage is that the method is inapplicable in late gestation. Furthermore, in some cases the miscarriage may be incomplete, which necessitates additional instrumental evacuation of the uterus.
