Endocrinology

Endocrinology is a clinical specialty that deals with the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of endocrine gland diseases (hypothalamus, pituitary gland, thyroid gland, parathyroid and adrenal glands, pancreas), as well as metabolic diseases.

The main diseases subject to this specialty are:

  • Diabetes;
  • Metabolic syndrome;
  • Overweight;
  • Dyslipidemias;
  • Thyrotoxicosis and hypothyroidism;
  • Osteoporosis;
  • Hormonal imbalance (in peri-, meno- and postmenopause, etc.).

Diabetes mellitus is one of the most widespread and socially significant diseases, the frequency of which is progressively increasing. In Bulgaria, about 580,000 people suffer from diabetes, or 20% of the population over 40 years old.

Diabetes mellitus usually does not cause any significant clinical symptoms in its initial stages. Consequently, the condition is often diagnosed by accident during random laboratory testing. However, undetected high blood sugar levels can lead in the long term to vision impairment, myocardial infarction, stroke, limb amputation, kidney function impairment, etc.

The initial screening for diabetes mellitus should be carried out after the age of 40, and after the age of 45 - every 3 years, even in low risk patients.

On the other hand, it is reasonable to screen for diabetes mellitus and/or any other disorders of carbohydrate metabolism as early as possible, especially in the presence of positive family history (presence of diabetes mellitus in the family), overweight, sedentary lifestyle, etc.

In recent years, the incidence of diseases of the thyroid gland has steadily increased. For this reason, they should be actively screened for, even in the most discreet clinical symptoms. Thyroid gland disease can cause or worsen existence of elevated blood pressure, rhythm-conduction disorders, complications in pregnancy, etc.
