Chemical peeling
A chemical peel is a dermatological procedure that involves applying a solution with acids to the surface of the skin.
The aim is to remove its damaged and aged top layer.
In this way, the skin becomes healthier, with improved texture, tone and appearance.
Chemical peels are commonly used to treat a variety of skin concerns, including acne, fine lines and wrinkles, uneven pigmentation, sun damage, and more.
There are different types of chemical peels. They differ mainly in the depth of penetration and the specific skin problems they treat:
- Superficial peeling - it uses mild acids to gently exfoliate the surface epidermis - alpha-hydroxy acids (AHA) or beta-hydroxy acids (BHA). This type of chemical peel is primarily indicated for improving skin texture, reducing surface hyperpigmentation and imperfections, giving the skin a fresher appearance. Superficial peeling has a minimal recovery period.
- Medium-Deep Peeling - This uses stronger acids, such as trichloroacetic acid (TCA) and others. This type of chemical peel is effective in treating more pronounced wrinkles, deeper hyperpigmentation, photodamaged skin, and more. With medium-deep chemical peels, there is usually some recovery time as the skin goes through a shedding phase.
Depending on the type of chemical peel used, the medical cosmetic specialist will advise you on how to prepare your skin with specific products a few weeks before the procedure itself. This helps optimize results and minimize potential side effects. It is extremely important that the instructions given to you about the recovery period after the procedure are also followed in order for it to proceed properly.
The use of chemical peels can be associated with significant benefits, but it is by no means a tool that is suitable for treating all types of dermatological problems. It is wise to consult with your medical cosmetic specialist in advance to determine the most suitable type of chemical peel for your skin type.
