Clinical Gynecology
Intrauterine device
The insertion of an IUD (intrauterine contraceptive) is a minor gynecological intervention that can be performed on an outpatient basis.
The manipulation is performed on a gynecological chair and does not require special preparation on the part of the patient.
It is good to plan in the last days of the menstrual cycle.
What type of IUD will be inserted, what are the advantages and disadvantages of this method of contraception, etc., is specified and discussed with the treating OG beforehand.
After placing an appropriately sized speculum (instrument for visualizing the cervix), the cervix is grasped with an instrument. The depth of the uterine cavity is checked (hysterometry) and the IUD is inserted. This is followed by a control ultrasound examination, during which the correct placement of the IUD in the uterine cavity is assessed.
The procedure is tolerated extremely easily by the patients, and a reliable contraceptive effect is provided immediately after.
