Clinical Gynecology
Vaginal discharge
Microbiological testing allows isolation and identification of the most common microorganisms (bacteria or fungi).
Therefore, during a standard gynecological examination, a sample is taken from the vaginal or cervical canal. Afterwards, it is transported in a special nutrient medium to an appropriate microbiological laboratory.
In the microbiological laboratory, the sample is inoculated on a suitable culture medium. In case there is an elevated contamination with pathogenic microorganisms, they can be easily isolated and identified. The final result is usually completed within a few working days.
Taking a vaginal wet smear does not require any special preparation on your part.
It is good to know from a practical point of view that:
- The vagina is not a sterile and different types of microorganisms are often isolated in it. Some of these are necessary to maintain an optimal healthy vaginal environment (e.g. lactobacilli);
- Other types of bacteria, called "opportunistic pathogens," usually exist in the vagina without causing disease. In some cases, however, they can cause or complement the picture of a vaginal inflammation;
- A third part of the bacteria are "obligatory pathogenic" - their presence in the vagina is always associated with a different degree of disease;
The result of the microbiological examination of vaginal discharge should not be taken for granted and, accordingly, the treatment should not be determined solely by it;
The diagnosis and treatment plan are specified by your gynecologist after a complex evaluation of the results of the anamnestic data, clinical symptoms, microbiological examination and the objective findings of the gynecological examination.
